John Peura grew up in rural Kettle River as a fifth-generation Carlton County resident. John's background is in the behavioral sciences: management, psychology, and leadership.
John comes from a working family background. His dad owns and operates a small business and owns a century farm and his mom is a former educator. John learned at an early age what hard work and dedication is from hauling firewood to grading gravel roads and planting trees to serving in high-stress environments. John has applied those early life lessons throughout his career.
John has served as a:
state corrections officer (Minnesota Correctional Facility – Rush City (2003 - 2007),
as the public member on the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education (2019 – present),
substitute teacher (Barnum and Moose Lake school districts, 2020 - Present),
first responder/emergency medical responder (City of Kettle River Volunteer Fire Department, 2019 - 2021),
and as a mental health practitioner in St. Louis, Carlton, and Pine Counties (2009 – 2020).
John was part of the AFSCME Council 5 family as part of Locals 1539 and 3558.
John served as a director on the AFSCME Local 3558 executive board
and served as the vice-chair of his bargaining unit for five months
